Failing to buy gift, lover ends life !!

KOLKATA: A demand for an expensive cellphone has driven a young man to end his life after he failed to live up to his girlfriend's expectations. Kamal Das (23) shot himself with a pipegun next to a pond near his hou-se in New Barrackpore on Friday night. His father, Satyaranjan, claimed the boy had been under severe pressure from a 19-year-old neighbour. Life had been fine for Kamal, a small-time trader, for over a year of courtship till his girlfriend sprung her cellphone demand. The undergraduate student of Acharya Prafulla Chandra College even threatened to walk out on him if Kamal failed to meet her demand. The desperate youth tried to arrange money but failed. "Kamal had sought loans from friends to buy the phone for the girl, but he couldn't arrange the money," said his friend Bankim Das. A couple of months ago, the girl walked out on 'loser' Kamal, leaving him heartbroken. She started seeing another youth, who reportedly assured the girl he would buy her a cellphone. "Though Kamal was depressed following the break-up, he was trying to lead a normal life. But the girl called him again recently. This made him distraught all over again," said Palash, another of Kamal's friends. The girl allegedly renewed her demand on ringing up Kamal. They spo-ke for a considerable period of time. Kamal's elder brother overheard the couple having a heated argument over the phone. Soon after, around midnight, the youth stormed out of home. Neighbours then heard a gunshot. They rushed out to find Kamal lying in a pool of blood near the pond. Kamal's father has filed a case of abetment to suicide against the girl and her mother at Ghola police station. The police have detained them for questioning and are also probing how Kamal managed to get the gun. A probe has revealed the girl had had several affairs and allegedly extracted expensive gifts from her suitors. The girl's father, a state government employee, denied the allegation.
